The Story Behind M. Kind Papersmith: A Journey of Connection, Kindness, and Humour

We’re here to celebrate life! The birthdays, the holidays, the best days AND the shitty days. At M Kind Papersmith, we celebrate life’s big and little moments with kindness, a pinch of salt and a dash of humour. 

M. Kind Papersmith began after my life took a nosedive. Fresh out of an abusive relationship and a horrible breakup, anxiety and depression left me feeling like the loneliest person on the planet. Spoiler alert: I survived. In the midst of it all, I found solace in the most unexpected place—snail mail. Weird, right? But sending and receiving handwritten notes to friends and family gave me a connection that DMs just couldn’t touch.

Drawing from my background in animation, I started painting and creating cards like my life depended on it. It became my therapy—something tangible, calming, and way more satisfying than doomscrolling. It wasn’t just about the words; it was the combination of pictures and text, the feel of the paper, and the act of giving someone something real—something that won’t get lost in a sea of digital noise. And if I could add a little humor to brighten someone’s day? Even better.

My friends and family were delighted with my designs and began asking for copies to send to their own loved ones. That’s how M. Kind Papersmith came to be.

Each image begins with a paintbrush and gouache paint meeting paper, and is crafted with care, printed locally in Halifax, and hand-packaged in eco-friendly materials from my home. My husband (No, not the ex!) crunches numbers and helps with the tech stuff, and our kids even help with packaging our orders.

In a world driven by quick likes and disappearing messages, M. Kind Papersmith offers a much-needed antidote. I hope my cards help you pause, laugh, and reconnect with those you love—because life’s too short not to send the damn card.
